With the plug-in hybrid vehicle based on the BMW 5 Series Sedan in the long wheelbase version, BMW Brilliance Automotive now has the concrete outcome of this strategy. Series production of the automobile is to start in China in 2013.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe comes with 4+1 seats, while a 113-millimetre longer wheelbase than the BMW 6 Series Coupe allows it to offer a noticeable increase in legroom for the rear passengers. Plus, a through-loading facility and folding rear seat backrests give a further boost to practicality and increase boot capacity from 460 litres to 1,265 litres.

2012 BMW M3 DTM

Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe integrates the stand-out looks and dynamics of a Coupe into a fresh new model with a fascinating character all of its own. The hallmark proportions of a BMW are reproduced in an unusually low-slung, sporty package given the car’s four-door construction. And they are defined by a fresh interpretation of the three-box design: a sweeping, powerfully contoured bonnet, a long wheelbase – giving the car an elegantly stretched appearance – and a set-back passenger compartment. In addition, its low height and a roof line that flows in a shallow arc into the rear allow the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe to set a new aesthetic benchmark for four-door cars.

The BMW M6 Coupe sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds, the BMW M6 Convertible in 4.3 seconds. However, the dynamic character of both models is also defined by their mid-range agility, the precision of their turn-in and traction when accelerating out of corners, their precisely controllable handling under intense lateral forces and their stopping capability. The latest innovation designed to optimise the handling of the new BMW M6 Coupe and BMW M6 Convertible in highly dynamic driving situations are the M carbon-ceramic brakes, offered as an option for the first time.

2012 BMW M3 DTM Concept

The car offers an initial impression of what the BMW M3 DTM will look like when it lines up at the start of the 2012 season. However, the vehicle was not the only star of the evening at BMW Welt: BMW Motorsport also presented the first two drivers to be confirmed as wearing the company colours in the DTM as of next season – Andy Priaulx (GB) and Augusto Farfus (BR). Furthermore, the first partners of BMW Motorsport for 2012 were introduced.

BMW takes the development of intelligent hybrid drive systems to the next level with the introduction of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 – another series-produced model in which a combustion engine and electric motor join forces to enhance both efficiency and the brand’s hallmark driving pleasure. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 brings together a BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine, an electric drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the first time. The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled – and therefore extremely effective – energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for the premium executive car class. Its drive system generates combined output of 250 kW/340 hp, allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 60 km/h (37 mph), accelerates the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, limits average fuel consumption to between 6.4 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (44 – 40 mpg imp) and has CO2 emissions of just 149 – 163 grams per kilometre (figures according to EU test cycle, may vary according to the tyre format specified).

2012 BMW 3-Series M Sport Package

The new BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine’s displacement of 1,997 cc delivers maximum power of 180 kW/245 hp at 5,000 rpm while, thanks to twin-scroll turbocharging, the maximum torque of 350 Nm is developed at just 1,250 rpm and remains constant up to 4,800 rpm. These statistics translate to sheer dynamic performance: the new BMW 328i accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.9 seconds, on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
